Poonam went to Symbiosis International University which is in Pune to pursue a Degree in English literature. Poonam was crowned Miss Pune in 2005. She started modeling while she was studying and when she went for a ramp show in Hyderabad, the director Kuchipudi Venkat of the movie called ‘Modati Cinema’ noticed her and asked her if she was interested in movies or not.
